Johnson, Shelby sheriffs search for burglars

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Neighboring county sheriffs are investigating two home break-ins that they believe are related. The crimes both happened within a three hour window near the Shelby-Johnson county line.

The items stolen are worth more than $7,500 total, according to detectives. Officials have not released a description of suspects or a vehicle, but they did release an audio recording captured by the Shelby County victim’s security system.

In the recording, a person can be heard saying they’re looking for jewelry. Officials said thieves eventually stole a guitar, headphones, a flat-screen TV and CDs from the home on West County Road 275 North.

It all happened just down the street from the rural home Melanie Lord grew up in.

“They’re not being very quiet,” Lord said when listening to the recording. “They just think, probably, there’s no chance of someone even being around to hear it.”

Less than three hours later, in Franklin on North County Road 700 East, detectives said someone broke into a home and got away with a laptop and jewelry.

“They’ll be caught eventually,” Lord said. “Especially if they’re going into Franklin. The houses are a lot closer together. People will see something.”

Detectives said they’re looking at fingerprints and tire tracks from the crime scene.
