Greenfield couple charged with child neglect for filthy living conditions

GREENFIELD (WISH) — A Greenfield couple is charged with child neglect after authorities said their five children had been living in filthy conditions. The house was filled with cockroaches, animal feces and trash.

It happened at a home in the 200 block of Gaslite Lane.

The five children, with the oldest being nie-years-old, are now under the care of the state.

Detectives talked to the children and said they all had the same story about mom and dad being abusive and doing drugs.

“It’s heartbreaking and it makes me sick to know that there are kids two houses down that could have use my help,” said Christina Melick, neighbor.

Authorities said Craig Corbett, 37, and Michelle Wilson, 33, are sitting in the Hancock County Jail charged with five felony counts of child neglect.

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” said Sue, another neighbor.

According to court documents, an officer walked inside to a strong smell.

“In the hallway were piles of garbage and debris. The walls had brown substance that appeared to be feces on the wall. Roaches were observed scattering on the walls and doors. The home was totally infested,” said officer in court documents.

“It makes my skin crawl, it’s just unbelievable you know that a parent could do that to their child,” said Melick.

Court documents also revealed details about the couple’s alleged drug activity inside.

The kids told officers how mom and dad would do marijuana and crack, but instead of calling it drugs, they called it medicine.

Their nice-year-old boy told officers “that his mom let him smoke marijuana one time through the bong. He said it was disgusting for his brain and changed his brain.”

“I mean five kids feeding them once a day? God only knows what they fed them. Giving their children drugs? They belong in jail for a very long time,” said Sue.

Corbett and Wilson are scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in November.
