Indy Humane Society holds Microchipping event

You can help protect your four-legged friends this month and keep them safe with an identification for life! Be sure and join the Humane Society of Indianapolis on Saturday, October 10, where for just $10, your pet can get microchipped. The event will run from 10am to 12pm and takes place at the Humane Society of Indianapolis (7929 N. Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268). All proceeds benefit the shelter!

Here are a few facts about pet safety and microchipping:

  • 1 in 3 pets will get lost in their lifetime; 90% of strays do not make it back to their owners
  • Roughly 30% of the pets IndyHumane takes in are lost/stray owned pets looking for an owner
  • Indy Lost Pet Alert – a resource for Central Indiana lost pets – has posted more than 15,000 lost and found pets in the last 2-1/2 years
  • Microchipping is a permanent, safe, and reliable source of identification that any veterinarian, shelter, or rescue can scan to get an owner’s contact information via a national listing service

    • Collars and tags can be lost
    • Tattoos (another form of identification) are uncommon and ineffective
    • Microchips are not GPS-enabled, and do not themselves contain any pet/owner information
  • Chipping services at the October 10 microchipping event are $10 and 100% of the proceeds will benefit IndyHumane and it’s programs thanks to the generous support of OneAmerica and WISH-TV
  • If your pet needs to be spayed or neutered, schedule an appointment at the IndyHumane Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic while at the event
