Deadly August, September creates challenges for IMPD

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is known for solving murders.

In 2014, the homicide department solved 74 percent of the murders in the city. That’s ten percent higher than the national average.

However in 2015, IMPD currently has a solve rate of 60 percent. The drop can be attributed to two factors.

Recently, IMPD reported to a total of 34 murders between the months of August and September in 2015. However in that same span in 2014, IMPD reported to 21 murder scenes.

The added cases in 2015 between those two months has slowed the department down. It’s estimated that it takes between six to eight weeks to hand a case with a suspect over to prosecutors.

What sometimes complicated matters is when the witnesses don’t want to talk or cooperate with police.

“Having witnesses and bring them to justice brings closure to the family, we are looking to hold people accountable,” said Lt. Richard Riddle.
