Indiana residents encouraged to join earthquake drill

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is encouraging Indiana residents to take part in an earthquake drill that will include 13 other states.

The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Thursday. Homeland Security officials say Indiana is exposed to a serious threat of earthquakes because of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, located 180 miles southwest of Evansville, and the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in southeastern Illinois and southwestern Indiana.

The correct response to an earthquake is to drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy desk or table and hold on until the shaking stops.

Homeland Security also is encouraging Indiana residents to check their homes and workplaces for items that could become dangerous in an earthquake, such as top-heavy furniture or appliances.
