Driver slams into IMPD officer’s squad car

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police took a man into custody early Thursday morning after they say he crashed into an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer’s squad car.

According to IMPD, it started with helping a broken down car but ended in a crash. Two officers’ vehicles were stopped at Keystone Avenue and Fall Creek Parkway to help a motorist.

While officers were directing traffic, a white Volkswagen, estimated to be going more than 50 miles per hour and heading southbound on Keystone, rear-ended one of the patrol cars.

All of the vehicles involved suffered some sort of damage. Witnesses said the car did not brake before the collision.

One officer, who was sitting in the car when it was hit, complained of back and neck injuries but opted not to go to the hospital.

The driver of the Volkswagen was taken into custody and transported to the hospital. Police say alcohol may have been a factor.

The roadway was still blocked around 4 a.m. Use caution if you’re driving through the area.
