Group to push for better retail jobs in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Thursday morning, an advocacy group plans to unveil a new initiative aimed at creating better jobs in Indianapolis.

The group, Lift Retail Jobs, said it will make the announcement at 10 a.m. at the City-County building. It’s the same group that was behind the “Retail Workers Bill of Rights” earlier this year. The City-County Council passed the bill or rights, which pushes for better pay, hours and affordable benefits. The resolution was only symbolic and did not enforce anything.

Lift Retail Jobs said its new initiative will have similar goals, though it’s still not clear what the initiative will specifically entail.

According to the group, and a study released earlier this year, Indianapolis is the ninth poorest metro area in the country. The advocacy group said many retail employers are not paying a living wage, and that keeps people from lifting themselves out of poverty. Opponents say a higher minimum wage could actually eliminate jobs, and force some businesses to close.

Lift Retail Jobs said business leaders, retail workers and some City-County Council members will be at the announcement.

24-Hour News 8 will update this story after the 10 a.m. event.
