FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne police said a 3-month-old is in critical condition after sustaining a head injury.

Police were called to the 3600 block of Ferndale Drive around 2:30 Sunday afternoon for a reported domestic battery.

FWPD Spokesman Officer Jeremy Webb said a 911 caller noticed injuries to the child and called police, but afterwards an argument took place between the 911 caller and the child’s mother.

Paramedics determined the child had suffered a head injury. The child was transported in serious condition, but was downgraded to critical condition at the hospital after further evaluation. Webb said previous injuries were also discovered on the child.

Police detained the child’s mother for questioning and the Department of Child Services was called to assist with other children at the home who required care and supervision.

Crime scene technicians were also called to process possible evidence.

The infant was still in the hospital Sunday evening undergoing additional testing, according to Webb.

Police have not released the name of the child’s mother or indicated if any charges have been filed.

The incident is under investigation.
