INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department police and SWAT teams worked to rescue a man after he set an east side house on fire on Monday.
According to IMPD officials, police were called to the 3500 block of North Layman Avenue on the report of a barricaded subject around 10:30 a.m. This is near East 34th Street and North Arlington Avenue.
Police say the person barricaded set the house on fire.
Prior to setting the house on fire, police say the suspect took car keys from his girlfriend, taking her car and driving through several yards in the process. During his escaped with the car, the individual also managed to shear a telephone pole in half.
When police arrived on scene, the man was sitting in the driveway holding a large butcher knife and it was at that time the man retreated into the house.
After setting the house ablaze, the man got onto the roof. Police tried to get him to come down with a ladder, but that proved unsuccessful as the suspect kicked the ladder away.
He was eventually subdued after police shot him with rubber bullets and a stungun.
IMPD tweeted a picture from the scene, which showed a man standing on the roof of the home. They said the incident had been mitigated.
