Evansville council candidate had relationship with student

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – A retired high school teacher running for Evansville City Council admits he had a sexual relationship with a student about 40 years ago.

Republican candidate Jack Schriber tells the Evansville Courier & Press the relationship occurred in the mid-1970s. He says the student was 17 or 18 at the time.

However, the victim told Evansville police he was between 15 and 17 when he was “coerced” into a nonconsensual relationship with Schriber that lasted more than two years. He said he felt he could not end the relationship without hurting his academic and extracurricular activities.

Schriber says he knows the revelation will ruin him “professionally, politically and personally.”

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says he has asked the Vanderburgh County GOP Chairman to take steps to end Schriber’s council campaign.
