MLK monument in Kokomo nears completion

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) – The Martin Luther King Jr. monument project in Kokomo is now less than a month from completion. This week, custom granite slabs will be added to the limestone-based structure.

The slabs will feature powerful messages relayed by the civil rights leader.

The foundation is also ready for the eight foot carved statue of King that will stand in the center of the wall-shaped design.

The memorial will come complete with several benches and a kiosk.

Community members raised $150,000, the estimated cost to fund the construction.

City leaders say, they hope this inspires residents in Kokomo and Howard County, to further the work and philosophy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The sketch shows what the finished sculpture will look like. The artist is Jonathon Russell.

The MLK Jr. memorial is located at the junction of Apperson Way and LaFountain Street in Kokomo.
