JASPER COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – An Indiana State Police trooper in northern Indiana was seriously injured when a semi hit his squad car Wednesday morning.

It happened around 5:20 a.m. on State Road 10, just east of 1100 West, in Jasper County. Preliminarily, police say the trooper had just turned on his emergency lights and was making a U-turn to go after someone. The trooper made the turn in front of an oncoming semi and the two vehicles collided.

According to police, the trooper was trapped in his vehicle and needed to be extricated by emergency crews. He was airlifted to a hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois with serious injuries. Officials said those injuries were not life-threatening. The driver of the semi was not hurt.

The roadway remained closed nearly five hours after the crash.
