Neighbors recall scary south side SWAT standoff

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A man involved in a SWAT standoff on the south side of the city Friday afternoon was wanted for seven outstanding warrants, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Police say Jason Sexton will add a charge of resisting law enforcement to that list after what happened when they tried to bring him into custody.

According to a public records search, the 36-year-old had prior felony theft convictions along with a number of other charges dating back to August 2011.

On Friday, investigators received a tip that Sexton was visiting his girlfriend’s home on Ringgold Avenue.

When police showed up, witnesses say Sexton bolted on foot, but he did not get far. Just a few doors down, he was found hiding under a front porch.

“I saw he had a gun on him. He had a gun in his hand,” said witness Patricia Downy.

A standoff between police and Sexton lasted an hour and a half. SWAT team members gave verbal commands, telling Sexton to come out with his hands up.

“I didn’t know if there was going to be gunfire, so I stayed inside behind the second wall with two walls between me,” said witness Rufus Downey.

No one was injured during the standoff.

IMPD says SWAT team members physically removed Sexton out of the hiding space when he did not respond to their verbal commands.
