Muslims say education, tolerance needed after woman’s attack

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – Members of Bloomington’s Muslim community say a recent attack on a Muslim woman is a sign they still face prejudice and need to educate others about Islam.

Islamic Center of Bloomington member Hemayatullah Shahrani says the best way for Muslims to fight intolerance is with tolerance.

Indiana University Muslim Student Association President Fariha Hossain says her group believes spreading awareness and working with others to understand what it means to be Muslim is an appropriate response to the Oct. 17 attack in which an Indiana University student shouted racial slurs and tried to remove a Muslim woman’s headscarf.

The Herald-Times reports Shahrani and Hossain were among the speakers Saturday when IU students and members of the Muslim community rallied to spread awareness about the treatment of Muslims.
