South Bend project gets tentative approval on tax cuts

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – South Bend officials have tentatively approved a fourth tax abatement for a $30 million project to transform the former Chase Tower into an Aloft hotel and residential building.

On Monday, the Common Council approved a preliminary resolution for the abatement worth $1 million over 10 years related to the residential portion of Washington Square Realty’s project, which includes 83 units on the upper floors of the 25-story downtown building.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the council previously granted preliminary approval to three other tax abatements worth a combined $2.8 million for the parking garage, hotel and retail portions of the project.

The council is expected to consider final approval for all four tax abatements next month.
