Fire damages Columbus home

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – A garage fire damaged a home and displaced two families late Sunday evening.

The Columbus Fire Department responded to a report of a fully involved garage fire in the 600 block of Hutchins Ave. at 11:00 p.m. Sunday.

As firefighters battled the blaze, they determined that nobody was inside at the time of the fire. A search of the home determined that it was divided into two apartments.

The fire spread through the garage wall into the kitchen of one apartment before firefighters managed get the blaze under control.

Investigators believe the fire started in a wood working shop in the garage, although at this time the official cause has not been determined.

The American Red Cross is assisting the affected residents.

Damage from the fire is estimated at $75,000.
