Neighbors want justice after Warren Central student’s killing

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police found a Warren Central High School student dead inside his car after midnight on Halloween.

It happened in the 3900 block of Tribley Drive on the city’s northeast side of Indianapolis. It was Saturday night when 18-year-old Raymond Alvarez Jr. had just stopped by to see his family, something he often did. Witnesses say they saw him in his car listening to music.

“Then bang bang, and I come out to see the red and blue lights,” said Valerie Diaz-Rivera, who lives nearby.

Immediately, chaos ensued.

“Everyone was screaming and yelling and, ‘Ahhhh!’ Tell me this ain’t true. Tell me this isn’t real,” said Diaz-Rivera.

Ebony Gamill also heard the screaming.

“The family was out like, ‘Oh my gosh. Somebody call 911.’ So I just picked up the phone and called 911,” said Gamill.

By the time neighbors realized what was going on, it was too late.

When police arrived, they found Alvarez inside the driver’s seat. He was dead from an apparent gunshot wound. On Monday, the crime scene was mostly cleaned up, but there were remnants of an unfortunate incident.

Diaz-Rivera started a memorial that decorates the area where the teen was slain.

“This used to be his parking spot. That’s in memorial of him getting shot right here,” said Diaz-Rivera.

And as they remember Alvarez, they’re not going to forget who is responsible either.

“I want justice. I want them to have justice. I want whoever did that to go where they belong. Because he didn’t belong where he went,” said Diaz-Rivera.

In a statement, Warren Township said in part:

“The entire school district of Warren Township is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Raymond Alvarez Jr., a student at Warren Central High School. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the Alvarez family during this challenging time. It is our sincere hope that in response to this tragedy our community will bind together to make the safety of our children a top priority. “

A GoFundMe page has been setup to help the family with funeral expenses.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
