2 arrested after IMPD officer hurt in shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Officials are investigating after a shooting that hurt an IMPD officer.

Police say it happened just before midnight Monday. They say an officer with the Southeast late shift heard what he believed to be gunshots while on patrol.

While investigating, they say he encountered Jeff Bingham, 27, and Luis Olvera, 28, in an alley east of South East Street, near the 1300 block. Officials say he tried to stop the two men, but they refused.

A short foot pursuit ensued.

Police say it was during the pursuit that one of the two suspects fired a gun, hitting the officer in the wrist. He received a minor injury.

Officials say the officer did not return fire. He was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in good condition. Police say he is a 7-year veteran of IMPD.

Detectives arrested both men on the preliminary charges of criminal recklessness and possession of firearm which are both felony level charges. They were both also given a  preliminary misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement.

Officials said that detectives also recovered a gun and a pound of marijuana.
