Board of Education to consider delay to diploma overhaul

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana’s GOP-dominated State Board of Education is scheduled to consider delaying strict new diploma standards amid criticism from parents and educators.

Members of the board were expected to vote Wednesday on the diploma overhaul, which would eliminate the general high school diploma.

However, a proposal by Republican-appointed board member Steve Yager requests a delay to the adoption of the new diploma format and also calls for reinstating the general diploma.

The proposed diploma overhaul has faced opposition from parents and teachers who say the more-stringent requirements would unfairly affect special needs students while diminishing the role of fine arts in high school curricula.
