Child continues to recover after horrific summer crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A child who was hospitalized after a deadly crash in Fountain Square over the summer is now recovering at home.

A spokeswoman with IU Health provided the update about 11-year-old John Rogers this week. John arrived at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in June, paralyzed from an internal incomplete decapitation in the spine, hospital officials said.

He was injured in a collision with a fleeing robbery suspect at South State Avenue and Prospect Street. John’s grandmother was killed in the crash.

Hospital officials say after multiple spine surgeries and months of rehab, John is back at home and doing better than doctors predicted. Doctors didn’t expect John to ever walk again because of the severity of his injuries.

Officials say John is now taking steps with the assistance of a walker and continues to improve every week.
