Indy’s homicide rate reaches 124 in 2015

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – According to IMPD, the city’s homicide rate now stands at 124 after three different shootings Wednesday night.

Investigators said the first happened in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Indy’s northwest side. A 26-year-old man was found dead on Candletree Circle, near Lafayette and Georgetown Road. Two hours later, an 18-year old was shot and killed near the intersection of 35th and Biscayne Road. Police then found a man dead inside the driver’s side of an S-U-V at Fox Hill Court, another apartment complex near 62nd and Michigan Road. The 29-year-old victim’s vehicle then slammed into a nearby fence.

“We had a 18-year-old victim shot, and older man was shot, then another person was gunned down in a different location. This has stop, we all need to come together,” said IMPD Chief of Police, Rick Hite.

Shortly after 10 p.m., Nigel Willis’s family received news no parent should ever have to hear, that their loved one was found dead at Dubarry Park.

“He was only home for twenty-four hours before this happened. I am clueless. He had such a big heart. I am going to miss him,” said Justice Adell.

The 18-year-old was transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital where doctors made several attempts to try and save his life.

Investigators aren’t sure why he was targeted.

His family said Willis was recently released from jail, just one day ago, but unfortunately, he will never get the chance to turn his life around.

“I heard gunshots, then I heard yelling and screaming. When I saw his body lying lifeless, it was heartbreaking,” said Tamika Sanders.

Nigel Willis’s family organized a candle light vigil to honor his life. The event will be held 7:30p.m. on Thursday at the location where the teen lost his live, near the 3500 block of Biscayne Road. They also invited the Ten Point Coalition to help offer the community support.
