Dog unhurt after nearly 30-foot-fall down well

TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) – A Taunton Massachusetts dog is safe Wednesday after falling nearly 30 feet down into a well on his owners’ property.

The family was reunited with Buddy after city firefighters saved him in a dramatic underground rescue that was caught on camera.

When the 2-year-old goldendoodle didn’t return home Monday night, his family feared the worst. They were out most of the night calling for Buddy, but there was no sign of him anywhere.

The next morning, Buddy’s father went outside and ran over to the well. The family followed, spotted Buddy at the bottom and quickly dialed 911.

“We kind of strapped him up in a makeshift, flying-by-the-seat-of-our-pants deal,” said Jared Jackson of the Taunton Fire Department. “Made a little rig, had two lifts and brought him up and got him out of there.”

Buddy’s owner Curtis Higgins said he looked pretty miserable after firefighters got him out.

“I felt bad for him because he was down there all night,” said Higgins. “It was pretty cold the night before, and he was in some water and he looked miserable.”

Buddy may have been miserable, but somehow he wasn’t hurt. Now, the playful pup is back to his old tricks.

“He’s a very special dog,” added Higgins. “He’s kind, and smart. Very smart.”

The family said this week’s incident was actually Buddy’s second brush with death. They said he also survived being hit by a car.
