BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana University police are investigating after a female student was attacked on campus by two men early Friday morning.

It happened in Dunn’s Woods near the Sample Gates on IU Bloomington’s campus. IU reported the assault around 2:20 a.m.

Officials say the woman was starting to enter the woods and was near the gazebo when the men emerged and began assaulting her. According to an IUPD spokesman, the men groped the woman during the assault and held a knife or sharp object to her throat.

Police say the woman was able to get away. She declined an ambulance afterward, officials said, but she did go to a local hospital with minor lacerations.

Officers are currently looking for the suspects. IU said they are both college-aged men. One of the suspects is wearing a red sweatband on his wrist and one is armed with a sharp object, possibly a knife. Both were said to be wearing dark jackets or hoodies.

IU sent out emergency alerts to students via email and phone call, and also tweeted about the reported assault, advising people in the area early Friday morning to “seek safe shelter” and lock windows and doors immediately.

The university said later in the morning that police are continuing to investigate the incident, but determined there was no immediate threat to public safety.

Officials remind people in the area to remain vigilant, always walk in well lit areas and in groups. They’re asking students to make sure to report suspicious activity to IU Police whenever they see it.
