Local mayors announce data share initiative

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Four Central Indiana cities announced Monday that they are creating a data sharing program designed to help each other’s cities excel.

The mayors of Indianapolis, Fishers, Greenwood and ZIonsville will have what is called a joint open data initiative. The cities will share what works for them and what doesn’t work.

The sharing includes raw data on things like citizen complaints, police complaints and officer involved shootings.

“We do not provide them with filtered reports,” said Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. “We gave them unfiltered access to data and just got out of the way.”

While other cities have open data, this is the first time cities have combined their efforts on a regional basis.
