Families affected by domestic violence get shopping spree

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and in most homes, that means family and food. But for some, this isn’t a reality.

That’s why Tuesday evening, the Indianapolis Colts teamed up with “Sheltering Wings” and Meijer to provide shopping sprees to 10 families subjected to domestic violence.

The families were given $200 to shop for Thanksgiving food and supplies.

While mothers filled their carts, the kids got to hang out in the back, getting to know the Colts players.

“This is a great opportunity to give back, enjoy Christmas and Thanksgiving,” said Colts cornerback Greg Toler. “It’s awesome.”

Tuesdays are the only scheduled days off for NFL players during the regular season. The Colts make it a habit of engaging in at least one community event each Tuesday.

About 20 kids took part in the event.
