Deputies: Woman dies after fight over shoes

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – A Pompano Beach woman died after she was in a fight with another woman about shoes.

Nicole Hewitt was pronounced dead at North Broward Medical Center on Sunday evening.

Broward County Sheriff’s Office Deputies say Hewitt had been involved in a fight with Cortez Fields, age 18, of Pompano Beach on Saturday night.

Fields had loaned a pair of shoes to Hewitt.

Detectives say Fields went to Hewitt’s home to get the shoes back and became angry when Hewitt told her to leave.

Fields punched Hewitt in the face with a closed fist. Hewitt then fell backward and hit her head on a concrete stairwell, according to an arrest affidavit.

Fields allegedly told detectives that Hewitt got up and grabbed her neck. Fields then pushed Hewitt into the stairwell and held her down, then struck her on the side of the head with a closed fist. Fields said she observed bumps and swelling on Hewitt’s face.

Fields also claimed that Hewitt chased her away.

Detectives say that Fields told them “I never killed anyone before,” during an interview.

Hewitt was transported to the hospital after a relative found her lying in her bed with severe swelling to her face. Paramedics say she was unresponsive during the ride to the hospital. She was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The exact cause of her death has not been determined.

Cortez Fields was charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability.
