Kokomo police looking for counterfeit bill spending suspect

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) – Thousands of dollars in fake $100 bills were spent throughout Howard County since August of 2015.

There were 27 businesses in Kokomo that were scammed and some are inside the Markland Mall. Big chains were also duped including Subway, Pet Supplies Plus and Menards.

A 33-year-old women was arrested in October for trying to pay for items with the counterfeit money in the Markland Mall. She was charged with a level 6 felony.

The Kokomo Police Department released a new photo of another suspect. They said he stands five feet eight inches tall, has a medium build and is in his mid-20’s.

KPD believes they are folding and crunching up the fake money to give them a warn look.

“They are bleaching out a $1 bill and printing a $100 bill on top of it. This is why they are passing the marker test. Store employees need to take their time inspecting them. If they think the shopper is suspicious, ask them to pay with other bills or by card,” said KPD detective Michael Banush.

As of November 18, KPD has retrieved $3,000 in $100 counterfeit bills.

They want anyone with information to call detective Michael Banush at 765-456-7278.
