Purdue protest leaders meet with Daniels on racism concerns

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Student organizers of a Purdue University demonstration last week have met with school President Mitch Daniels to discuss what they say are problems with campus racism.

About a dozen students met privately with Daniels for about an hour on Tuesday in his office on the West Lafayette campus. The students say they outlined to Daniels the 13 demands that were presented during Friday’s rally, including minority student and faculty recruitment goals and adding provisions to school policies to deal with hate speech.

Student organizer Adam Williams told reporters afterward that Daniels didn’t make any commitments and that the meeting was tense at times.

Daniels said in a statement some of the concerns merit more research and reflection. Daniels says he’s meeting with more student groups to discuss the situation.
