1 dead in Shelby County I-74 crash involving semi

SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — One person has died after a crash on I-74 in Shelby County, according to Indiana State Police.

It happened near the 115 mile marker near Shelbyville around 5:15 p.m.

ISP says it appears the driver of a van left the road, crossed the median and crashed into a Fed-Ex semi traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the van, 78-year-old James Byard of St. Paul, has died.

The semi driver, Jerry Hodgkin, 45, of Cincinnati, was taken to the hospital with a hand injury.

All lanes of I-74 were closed for a time as crews investigated the crash.
