INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – IUPUI says it plans to label 15 restrooms in 12 buildings across campus as “all-gender.”

The university announced the plans in a faculty newsletter this week. It included a rendering of the sign that will appear outside the facilities.

Officials say the all-gender designation is in response to student feedback and is an effort to be more inclusive.

The university says the bathrooms are open to everyone regardless of gender expression or identity. They also hope the new bathrooms will be helpful for families with children or caregivers when a gender specific bathroom may present difficulties.

IUPUI also says it will build a new center for LGBTQ students in the Multicultural Center in Taylor Hall.

Butler also added new all-gender bathrooms to certain campus buildings in October.

The dean of the arts college started the movement to get the bathrooms. He said it’s an important step to making everyone feel comfortable.
