Teen killed in Montgomery County crash

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – At least one person died and four others were injured after a crash in Montgomery County Tuesday night.

Indiana State Police officials say the crash involved two vehicles and happened on Interstate 74 westbound, five miles west of the US 231 exit.

Officers were first called to the scene around 9:45 p.m. They say the crash involved a white 2008 GMC van driven by a 51-year-old man from Greenfield, Wisconsin and a 2002 green Pontiac Grand Prix driven by a 24-year-old man from Danville, Illinois.

Police say the GMC was eastbound in the right lane and the Pontiac was still parked on the side of the emergency lane after changing a tire. Police say as the Pontiac started to merge back into the right lane of I-74, the driver failed to yield to the GMC. The van hit the Pontiac, pushing both vehicles into the right shoulder.

Police say the driver of the GMC was transported to a Crawfordsville hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Pontiac and his front seat passenger were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries as well. Police say one of the back seat passengers was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital with life-threatening injuries. The second back seat passenger, 18-year-old Jesse Lee Saltzgiver of Danville, died at the scene, police say.

Police say no citations have been issued at this time. They say it appears drugs or alcohol may have contributed to the crash, but toxicology results are pending.

According to officials, it appears everyone was using seat belts. The crash remains under investigation.
