‘Mama Nettles’ and family serve up Chinese cuisine for all on Thanksgiving

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On a Thanksgiving morning, shortly after 11 o’clock, a line was outside the Fast Wok. The popular east side restaurant is known for serving some of the best Chinese cuisine in the city.

However, the line outside the door is tied to a conversation that happened between the owner, Mama Nettles, and some of her customers five years ago.

“She ran across people that didn’t have anywhere to go on Thanksgiving. It bothered her,” said CJ Nettles, the owner’s daughter.

So Mama Nettles had an idea. She decided to serve up her Chinese cuisine for free on Thanksgiving Day.

“They have big helpings, they have helpings and not servings,” said Helen Highbaugh, who stood in line with others to get a bite to eat.

24-Hour News Eight watched as the lines of feet shuffled through the doors for their chance to be served.

“I’m surprised and thankful, the food is delicious. When I came here the other day, I learned she is giving away free dinner on Thanksgiving,” said Johnny Mickle, as he stood in line with his wife.

The family served the meals with smiles, and it appeared that no one who paid a visit to the restaurant was a stranger.

“These are our people. It’s like spending Thanksgiving Day with the family, even though we are at work,” said CJ Nettles.

People brought their appetites up until 2 p.m., that’s when the restaurant closed for the day.
