Family of man shot on I-70 says he had no enemies
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Family and friends are preparing to say goodbye to an Indianapolis man who police said was found shot in his truck on Interstate 70.
It happened westbound near the 89 mile marker Wednesday night.
Indiana State Police identified the victim as Derrick Gregory, 30. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He died on Thanksgiving Day.
ISP arrived on scene to find his silver pickup truck crashed on a guard rail. Investigators said the truck had multiple bullet holes.
His family told 24-Hour News 8 he had no enemies. They’re not sure where Derrick was coming from or headed to that night, but what they are sure of is that someone knows something.
Chrissy Gregory sat on her front porch with her mother looking through photos on her phone. Many of the photos were of her brother Derrick.
“He looks really happy,” said Chrissy Gregory. “He’s smiling in literally every picture I have of him.”
Chrissy is now left wondering who would do this and why.
“If you shoot that many times, you’re aiming to kill. And for someone to want my brother die that drastically… we want answers,” said Chrissy. “I want to know why. I want to know, why did you have to take him from us in this horrible disgusting way?” said Chrissy.
While investigators are still working to figure out the motive and the timeline of what happened, Chrissy told 24-Hour News 8 her brother got along with everyone and was full of life.
“He had more energy than 10 kids. He was the happiest person you would ever meet,” said Chrissy. “He could make you laugh [even] if you really didn’t want to laugh.”
As the family continues to plan for the funeral, Chrissy is hoping someone from the community will speak up.
“We need to know someone had to have seen someone shooting at that truck as many bullet holes are in them. I don’t believe that no one saw anything,” said Chrissy. “I understand that people probably don’t want to get involved, but I really plead with them to get involved so that we can bury him and put some peace in our own minds and get these monsters off the streets.”
