INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A grieving family spent its holiday making funeral arrangements after a hit-and-run killed a 21-year-old man.
His family hopes community members will come forward with information on the hit-and-run that took their beloved Devan Matthews’ life.
It happened near the 3600 block of North Mitthoefer Road around 9 p.m. on Nov. 21.
“I wish whoever hit him would turn themselves in. This would bring the family some peace,” Devan’s stepfather, Ronald Alexander, said.
IMPD believes Matthews was hit several times by different cars. All of them were heading south on Mittoefer Road.
Witnesses described seeing a horrific domino effect that first started with a black pickup truck. Two drivers who also hit Devan waited for police, so did a passerby who spotted him trying to cross the street with groceries in hand moments before he was struck.
“This was my only son. He leaves behind children, his sisters and me. It’s going to hit me real hard when I see my son in a casket. The holiday are hard for me anyway; I also lost my daughter,” Devan’s mother, Shanitha Mathews, said.
Shanitha Mathews’ daughter, Shaneice Nicholson, was only 20 years old when her nude body was discovered in 2011. Pedestrians found her near 6500 Fall Creek Parkway on the northeast side of Indianapolis. She worked two jobs: at Long John Silvers and at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Both fast food restaurants are located at 71st Street and North Michigan Road.
Shaneice Nicholson’s case still remains unsolved.
Devan Mathews’ funeral will be held Dec. 4 at Levenia, Smith and Summers Home for Funerals.
Their address is 5811 E. 38th Street in Indianapolis. Their phone number is (317) 547-5814.
