‘Hopeless’ dog adopted after viral Facebook post

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — “This is what a hopeless dog looks like.”

That’s how the Humane Society for Hamilton County described Ox, a 14-year-old dog surrendered by his owner.

“We understand that people surrender pets to us for various reasons, and that’s what we’re here for,” the humane society posted on Facebook Monday afternoon. “But all we can do when we encounter a situation like this is collectively shake our heads…and hope. Hope that someone will see this heartbreaking picture of a 14 year old dog surrendered, and will be moved to do something.”

His longtime owner’s new significant other is allergic to Ox, the humane society said, prompting the dog to be given up.

“This is what a confused dog looks like,” the Facebook plea added above a photo of Ox hanging his head. “We hope that Ox can know love again…and the next picture we can share is of him in a new, loving, FOREVER home.”

The appeal for love for the aging dog spread like wildfire, racking up thousands of shares, comments and likes.

Less than two hours after the post went up, Ox’s hope was restored. The humane society’s director says one of the hundreds of thousands of people who read the message stepped forward to adopt Ox.

“OX IS BEING ADOPTED!!!” a new Facebook post exclaimed.

Now that Ox has found a loving home, the organization is using the Facebook post’s popularity to secure a family for Marlo, a 10-year-old blind dog who’s been passed over by many people.
