Final wish of Tenn. man with ALS is to see new ‘Star Wars’ at home

LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A La Vergne man with ALS is fighting both his disease and for the chance to see his favorite movie.

Nathan Ashley and his wife Kathleen are behind a campaign to bring the new “Star Wars” film to their home because Nathan will never be able to go to the movies again.

He hopes someone will listen to one of his last requests as one of the world’s biggest “Star Wars” fans.

“There’s not a lot that he has left that he can enjoy,” Nathan’s wife Kathleen told News 2.

He was diagnosed with ALS two and a half years ago. Since then, he’s lost the ability to do almost everything he’s always done.

“It’s basically taken everything out except some of his facial muscles,” Kathleen said.

But Nathan’s disease has not changed his love of “Star Wars,” so Kathleen continues to try and bring the movie, which will be released next month, to him in their home.MORE: The Force Awakens for Nathan Ashley on YouTube

“It’s almost like if you’re a big football fan, and everybody got to see the big game and they talk about the big play and you didn’t get to watch it. You feel left out,” she explained.

The Ashleys are not asking to see the film early; they hope the movie makers can send them a copy, in any format, since Nathan can’t leave their home.

And aside from the movie, Nathan has one last request of everyone.

“I just want people to understand how terrible ALS is, and how hard it is knowing you have a terminal illness and there’s nothing anyone can do,” he told News 2.

Earlier this month, a man in Texas with terminal cancer was allowed to see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in a pre-screening. It was his last request, and he died two days later.
