Fishers residents voice concern over traffic issues

FISHERS, Ind (WISH) – Some in Fishers are tired of increased traffic and are taking action.

The sounds of cars traveling down Brook School Road stretch is something neighbors have had to get used to. Mark Jones says a decade ago the road looked much different.

“There wasn’t much traffic at all, and certainly with all those developments there has been an increase,” Jones said.

Over the past decade, the Hamilton Town Center has opened, and the population around Brooks School Road has increased.

Those things have not only brought more traffic but also people looking for a shortcut.

“People are always driving fast down this street,” Jones said.

Some are tired of the traffic issues. One neighbor made fliers and created a Facebook page.

Her goal is to keep the road on the minds of leaders as the area continues to develop. It’s a message the city is hearing.

The city sent this statement to 24-hour News 8:

“We are lucky to have such engaged, proactive residents in our community. We welcome the opportunity to discuss the long-range plan with the concerned residents.”

While some are concerned about its future, others welcome the added development.

“I know it comes with the growth,” Fishers resident Mary Settle said. “I love all that’s coming out here to us.”

Officers said they are aware of complaints. Police have stepped up enforcement in the area by Brooks School Elementary where it drops to 25 miles per hour.

Officers say they do occasionally find people going 10 to 15 miles per hour over the speed limit. But other than that, they say the stretch or road isn’t much of a concern.

If anything, neighbors like knowing these fliers have them talking and the city listening.

“I’m glad people are concerned about it because, right now, I don’t notice a big problem, but I could see where it definitely could be a big problem,” Settle said.

“Everybody gets to be so busy they sometimes miss that kind of thing. You need a neighbor to sometimes say, ‘Hey, are you aware of this?” Jones said.

The future of the road hasn’t been decided. The city is currently working on its transportation plan that’ll be in place through 2040.

There’s a meeting next month on it, and they welcome feedback from residents.
