Indy council considering pay hike for incoming mayor

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indianapolis City-County Council is considering a significant pay raise for the incoming mayor and 25 council members.

The proposal would increase the base salary of Democratic Mayor-elect Joe Hogsett from $95,000 to $125,000 and would raise council salaries from $11,400 to $16,400. The increases would take effect in 2016 and would be the first ones since at least 2002.

Outgoing Democratic Councilwoman Mary Moriarty Adams introduced the proposal Monday. She says Indianapolis is way behind cities of similar size in pay for elected officials.

The mayors of Carmel and Gary are among those in Indiana with higher salaries.

Republican Councilman Aaron Freeman questions the pay proposal coming after the Nov. 3 election.

Hogsett takes office Jan 1. He says he wasn’t consulted about the proposal.
