Nicaragua’s Momotombo volcano spouts ash

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) – Nicaragua’s Momotombo volcano has spouted a plume of ash about 1,000 meters (yards) high.

The 4,255-foot (1,297 meter) peak in northwest Nicaragua also emitted some glowing rock on Wednesday, after gas and ash emissions began Tuesday.

Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo said the hot rock and ash “fortunately … are heading toward very sparsely populated areas.”

Nohelia Zamora lives near the volcano in the township of La Paz Centro.

Zamora said “since yesterday the volcano has been rumbling and ash and dust has been falling on us.”

In 1610, the city of Leon was destroyed during an eruption of the Momotombo and was relocated west, where it is currently located.
