Ohio boy praised for calling 911, helping crash victim

SIDNEY, Ohio (WDTN) – A Sidney Ohio fifth grader is being recognized for his bravery Tuesday.

Eleven-year-old Hurley Marrs, was walking to school when he heard a car accident and called 911.

The Longfellow Elementary student said he heard the crash, ran to the scene, and once he saw what happened he knew it was an emergency.

Sidney police responded to a woman who crashed her vehicle into a telephone pole around 7:30 Tuesday morning.

Authorities say they had two 911 calls come in, one of them from 11-year-old Hurley Marrs, who was walking to school when he heard the impact and a car’s horn going off.

Marrs said he ran towards the noise and once he saw what happened he got out his cell phone and called 911.

Officer Kyle Lambdin responded and was so impressed with Marrs’s actions that he gave the fifth grader a silver Sidney Police Department/Crime Stopper’s coin during school.

Officer Lambdin said those coins can only be earned.

“We had two 911 calls, one of those being Hurley’s he stayed at the scene he did everything that he possible could and more than what is expected of children his age,” said Lambdin.

“If you don’t do it now, later on you’re going to see someone like that or you’re going to be like that in that situation and someone’s not going to help you or they do and you’ll see what is done and you’ll want to help people,” said Hurley Marrs.

Sidney police said the woman driver is OK and was released at the scene.
