CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — Alcohol may be a factor in a crash near the Oakdale Dam late Wednesday night that seriously injured a Monticello woman, who later died in surgery from her injuries.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, 59-year-old Shirley Huffer was involved in the crash Wednesday around 10:30 p.m. near the Tippecanoe River close to the Oakdale Dam. Deputies said the crash occurred on County Road 1200 West, just south of County Road 725 North.

When authorities arrived on scene, they found Huffer unresponsive inside a truck. For reasons unknown, they said it appeared the pickup left the roadway and struck a tree because airbags were deployed.

Huffer had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was first taken to IU White Memorial Hospital in Monticello, but was later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis — where she died while in surgery.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reported the driver was not seat belted and alcohol is believed to be a factor. Toxicology reports are pending. They said the investigation continues at this time.
