Muncie woman admits fatally injecting ill mother

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) – A woman will spend no more than four years in prison under a plea agreement in which she admitted giving her chronically ill mother a fatal injection of a painkiller.

Thirty-one-year-old Amanda Kay Pratt has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide under the plea agreement that Delaware Circuit Judge Marianne Vorhees has taken under advisement. Vorhees has tentatively set sentencing for Jan. 4.

The Star Press reports  Pratt admitted during a hearing Wednesday she injected her mother, 54-year-old Penny Kerry, with a controlled substance that the older woman had obtained. Kerry died Feb. 7. A coroner ruled the death an accident due to methamphetamine poisoning.

Pratt said her mother suffered from chronic illnesses and would cry in bed after she no longer could receive pain medication prescriptions from her doctor.
