MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a widespread phone scam.

The department says they’ve “been bombarded” with complaints about the scam over the last few days.

The scammer claims to be from the sheriff’s department and that the resident owes money to Madison County courts.

“We are warning residence to please disregard these phone calls or just hang up once they receive such a call,” the sheriff’s department said in a release. “We have been investigating the callback numbers and they typically go to a pre-paid cell phone which is not traceable to any individual. These callers have done their homework. They have the sheriffs name and some information about the courts but we want residence to know that there are no such calls being made by any Madison County government agency.”

The caller claims that a jury duty fine must be paid.

The sheriff’s department says they’ve received well over 100 complaints in the last 72 hours.
