Armed trio in “Afro-style” wigs rob Fort Wayne bank

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Fort Wayne Police investigated a reported hold-up of an east-side bank Wednesday afternoon.

According to 24-Hour News 8 sister station, WANE, police were called just before 4 p.m. to the Salin Bank & Trust at 6433 E. State Blvd., just east of Maplecrest Road, on a report of an armed robbery there.

Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Joyner said an hour after the robbery that three men in hooded sweatshirts came into the bank, at least one with a silver handgun, and demanded money from the two clerks on duty. The men took a yet-to-be-determined amount of cash, ran out and drove off in a gold or silver Buick sedan, Joyner said.

The clerks told police the men were wearing “Afro-style” wigs, the hoods of their sweatshirts pulled over them, Joyner said.

No customers were in the bank at the time and no one was hurt in the robbery.

Crime scene technicians could be seen scouring the bank, taking pictures and gathering evidence. At least six Fort Wayne Police squad cars were on the scene along with a handful of detectives.

Joyner said police are also checking in with neighboring businesses around the corridor, hoping to seize surveillance footage that captured the suspects, or to speak with potential witnesses.
