Cathedral students hold prayer circle in honor of classmate

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Students at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis are coming together following the loss of a classmate.

School officials released a statement Thursday saying sophomore Jennifer Maginot had died.

Grief counselors were available to students at school and all after-school events Thursday were cancelled.

Friday morning, the school’s Positivity Club held a prayer circle in honor of Jennifer.

Students say they’re leaning on each other and also hoping to show their support to Jennifer’s family after this tragic loss.

“A junior asked us to hold this meeting to honor Jen, because she epitomized positivity and always had a smile on her face,” said senior Michaela Busch.

“The impact she’s had on everyone has been amazing. It’s really upsetting she was taken so young,” said another student.

“It’s shown me how much of a family Cathedral is. We’re all coming together to support our family in a time like this,” said student Alex Frank.

The school has not said how Jennifer died, but referred 24-Hour News 8 to a pediatric doctor at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

A letter sent from the school to parents says with exams so close, they’ve decided to make them optional for students: if they’d like to take them they can.

The letter also says both the wake and funeral for Jennifer will be at Cathedral. The funeral is set for Monday, Dec. 14.

Cathedral later said they received the following statement from Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health concerning the student’s passing.

“We have no evidence of a public health concern. There have been no recent cases of communicable meningitis treated at Riley at IU Health. No action is needed.”
