Thousands of Santas race through downtown Indy

About 2,000 people dressed like Santa Claus and ran through the streets of downtown Indianapolis for the annual Santa Hustle Indianapolis Half Marathon and 5K.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – It wasn’t hard to find Santa Claus on Sunday.

About 2,000 people dressed in white beards, Santa hats, and some in Santa suits participated in the 5th annual Santa Hustle Indianapolis Half Marathon and 5K which started and ended at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Runners and walkers were treated to candy and cookies along the race route, as well as some Christmas music and festive signs.

Zane Williams, 15, of Carmel finished first in the 5K race, running across the finish line just under 18 minutes after he took off from the start line.

Williams, a member of the Carmel High School cross-country team, said, “I was hurting a lot, but I just tried to go out there and do my best.”

Friends Christine Whitesell and Nicki Dyer from Miamisburg, Ohio, said Sunday was their first time participating in the race.

Dyer said, “We like to run together and we couldn’t pass the opportunity up to dress like Santa and get some cool shirts and enjoy.”

After the races, participants enjoyed an after party at Indianapolis Colts Grille.

The American Red Cross and Toys for Tots benefited from the event.
