1 dead, 9 hurt in northern Indiana van crash

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – One person is dead after a van went into a steep ditch and crashed head-on into a culvert Monday night.

The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department said the crash happened at 9:20 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 500 S and County Road 1000 W, the southwestern part of the county.

The van went off the road for an unknown reason, went down in a ditch and crashed into a culvert. Investigators said none of the 10 people inside were wearing seat belts.

One passenger died as a result of the crash. The driver and eight passengers were taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries and get evaluated. The conditions of the nine people weren’t known, but police said the injuries weren’t life-threatening.

The name of the victim won’t be released until family has been notified. Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash.

First responders came from Shipshewana, Topeka, Middlebury and LaGrange to assist with the collision.
