Alert issued for IUPUI for reported gunman near campus

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana University campus in Indianapolis sent out an alert on Tuesday that an unknown suspect was seen with a gun and headed to the campus area.

Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) used social media to alert students, faculty and staff that a gunman could be headed toward campus.

They informed people to lock their doors and seek shelter. People were also told to avoid campus.

The school also used a phone alert system to make calls to those who had signed up for the system. The school posted the following on their website:

IUPUI Alert! A subject with a Gun has been reported running toward the IUPUI campus from the 700 Blk of Blake St. If you are on campus, trust your instincts and take safe shelter in the nearest available room. Lock the door if possible. Remain in place until the police or a campus administrator known to you gives the ALL CLEAR. Call 911 if you have information about the armed person. If you are not on campus, stay away. Follow instructions from university officials or local authorities. For available information and updates on this incident visit emergency.iu.edu

According to police, the victim was walking into his apartment near the intersection of Walnut Street and Blake Street, when the suspect approached the victim, pointed a gun at the victim and demanded that the victim hand over his wallet.

Once the victim gave the suspect his wallet, the suspect fled the scene on foot and was headed towards campus, the victim told police.

Police said the the suspect they were looking for was a black male that stood at approximately six feet tall. Police said that the suspect was wearing a black hoodie, a black stocking cap and was wearing jeans.

The suspect stole a cell phone and there was an undisclosed amount of cash in the wallet.

Police said that no injuries were reported, but they are canvassing the area for a suspect matching the description.

Just before 4:30 p.m, the university Tweeted that no suspect had been found and that the shelter in place had been lifted.
