Plainfield parents worried about sending kids back to school after winter break

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Some parents in Hendricks County are worried about having to send their kids back to school after winter break.

Authorities are still trying to track down the person responsible for making threats to Plainfield High School.

The high school was quiet Thursday morning with the exception of several police cars patrolling the campus.

Administrators made the decision to close after learning about credible threats.

“Just shocked that it’s happening so close to home, like you hear about other places, but you don’t think it would be your hometown,” said Ronny Workman, parent.

Workman has a young daughter in elementary school in Plainfield.

He said he struggled with telling his daughter about what happened.

“The elementary schools, I hope they don’t mention it to them because they’ll just be afraid to go to school,” said Workman. “I don’t think they need to know about it anyway.”

He knows the district is doing everything to protect students and staff, but said he wouldn’t mind seeing metal detectors at front doors come January.

“For sure it would make me feel better as a dad to send my daughter to school because you never know now a day,” said Workman. “When I was little you never had to worry about stuff like this.”

Another parent, who didn’t want to be identified on camera, told 24 Hour News 8 she too has a young daughter in elementary school in Plainfield.

“You know I don’t want to live in fear but at the end of the day you know it’s better to be safe than sorry,” said concerned parent.

She said she’s not sure how the district is planning to address the threats to students, but is curious to see how they will address security.

“You want your kids to be safe you want to make sure that they have the proper security around them to make sure that if something were to happen they would be taken care of,” she said. “You know you’re essentially putting your child’s life in other people’s hands if the security is not there to cover it then I mean who’s going to be held accountable for this?”

A spokesperson for Plainfield Community School Corporation told 24 Hour News 8 in an email that is it still too soon to think about how they’re going to address the threats with students in January.

She said they’re focus right now is working with police on the investigation.
