2 members of ‘Block Burners’ gang agree to plea deals

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A member of the so called “Block Burners” gang has now been sentenced, and another had his charges dismissed.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers took down the majority of the gang in a raid this summer.

Craig Cooper has taken a plea deal, and has been sentenced to 14 days behind bars. Because of time served Cooper will only end up serving seven days behind bars.

Police say Cooper was one of the 35 gang members who officers arrested during Operation “Smoke Show” a huge raid in July.

IMPD said the gang was responsible for most of the crime on the east side.

Cooper was charged with maintaining a common nuisance. He was supposed to go to trial this week, but took the plea deal at the last minute.

Another member, Tyree Gillbert, had his charges dismissed. He was also supposed to go to trial this week.

Gilbert was facing unlawful possession of a fire-arm and criminal recklessness charges. Those charges have been dropped.

Other members of the gang are scheduled to go to trial in March.
